FAQs

What makes Isaiah Counseling & Wellness different?

We are not your typical counseling practice. In conjunction with counseling, we believe it is equally important to care for your mental health holistically. We encourage and support your involvement in other wellness services such as physical activity, nutrition, massage, yoga, and more, for a holistic approach to your wellness. Check out our wellness page for resources.

What’s the purpose of counseling?

Counseling helps you deal with personal issues, ranging from minor to major. By talking with a therapist or counselor, you learn better ways to express your feelings and improve your relationships. It’s a time dedicated to you, allowing you to be yourself and have someone understand you. Some people say, “I have friends that I talk to, so I don’t need counseling”. Friends are great. However, counseling is different from talking to a friend. When you talk with friends, you tell them your problems, and then you have to help them with theirs. In counseling, it’s all about you. You get to have someone support you with no expectation of you being their problem solver.

Does counseling really help?

More than 80% of people who engage in counseling are better off than those who do not, according to recent research. Counseling helps people pinpoint problems and understand how they can make things better. Counseling can shed light on complicated situations, and help people find solutions to problems.

How will I know if you are the right therapist for me?

To start, we recommend that you read therapists’ information under the “Meet our Team” tab to get a good sense of who your therapist is and what are the specialty areas.

Secondly, you may contact us at 704-910-2055 or email us to schedule a free, 10-minute telephone consultation, that as a starting point, we can speak together about your needs. The first time we talk, your therapist will ask you to give a brief description of the personal concerns you are interested in addressing in counseling, and will let you know how he/she may be able to help. Often times, people can get a good sense of us in this consultation call and whether they feel a comfortable vibe. If it feels right, we’ll schedule your first counseling appointment. If for some reason it does not feel like we’re the best therapist for you, we would offer to refer you to someone who may be better suited to you and your needs.

This is my first counseling experience. What should I expect?

Excellent question! You have the option of in-person or telehealth/ virtual sessions. If you come in person, when you arrive, please have a seat in our waiting room. You will be greeted by our admin support who will make sure you have completed online consent forms. Your therapist will greet you and invite you into his/her confidential room. If you choose to meet virtually, you will receive a secure meeting link through your client portal. Your therapist will meet you there. In either scenario, your therapist will invite you to share your story and will help you express why you are seeking help at this time. If you both feel good about moving forward, then you and your therapist will decide how often you will meet and what issues you will work on together.
